Report: Undrafted rookie Kyle Sloter has been signed to the Vikings practice squad

Kyle Sloter, many fans’ favorite preseason quarterback, was cut on Saturday, made it through waivers Sunday morning but then got snatched up by the Vikings before noon.

So much for the “oh, he’ll make waivers and end up on the Broncos’ PS” idea.

Sloter is still on A practice squad, but despite being dismissed - both literally and figuratively - by John Elway and the Broncos yesterday, the undrafted rookie from the University of Northern Colorado is laughing all the way to the bank today.

The writing was on the wall yesterday when the Cleveland Browns cut their very expensive backup Brock Osweiler - the formerly very expensive Texans quarterback who was also formerly the once-shunned-then-heralded-then-disregarded Broncos quarterback.

Immediately rumors that Denver was looking at bringing back Brock for vet minimum - to serve as backup to a seventh-round draft pick who used to back him up in Denver - started taking shape.

You just couldn’t make this stuff up.

It was a whirlwind day that probably took Sloter by surprise after several in the sports media had been predicting the young QB would make the 53.

After all, the No. 2, Paxton Lynch, was hurt and the Broncos would need a healthy backup.

In the end, Elway decided Osweiler’s seven official starts as a Bronco were enough to earn him a place back on Denver’s bench while he watches Siemian as the starter and waits for Lynch to get healthy.

But, of course, it could always go differently.

“I think with the opportunity we had to get Brock back, we’re excited about that opportunity to have that experience there with Brock,” Elway said Saturday. “Plus, with Paxton you never know with the throwing shoulder.”

Elway added some praise for Sloter, noting the quarterback was a candidate for the team’s practice squad.

“I will say this: Kyle Sloter did a hell of a job in the preseason and had a hell of a camp,” Elway said. “As I told him today when I talked to him, I said, ‘You don’t know this but I’m telling you from experience going from the preseason to the regular season is a big jump.’ We didn’t want to put him in that situation. Having been through that before and not having much success doing it very well myself my rookie year, we told Kyle that we’re going to release him and then we brought Brock in.”

In the end, the Broncos have Siemian, Osweiler and Lynch, while Sloter has a slew of new fans wishing him well in Minnesota.
