He’s about to be baaaack!
According to Cleveland.com’s Mark Kay Cabot the Denver Broncos are bringing back former second-round pick Brock Osweiler to be their backup quarterback. They waived undrafted free agent Kyle Sloter to make room for Osweiler on the roster.
Can confirm the #Broncos are signing former #Browns quarterback Brock Osweiler. It will provide a little break on the $16M guarantee— Mary Kay Cabot (@MaryKayCabot) September 2, 2017
I wrote a piece on this yesterday after Osweiler was released by the Cleveland Browns because it makes perfect sense.
The Broncos spent a second round pick on Osweiler, they offered him a big money contract before he ran off to Houston, and he has experience in Mike McCoy’s offense. If you’re looking for a backup at this stage of the year, those qualities usually win out. Despite everything that happened in the past, this move makes perfect sense and might be the right move right now.
Osweiler spent four seasons with the Denver Broncos and totaled 2,162 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. In 2015 when he had some extended playing time for the Broncos, he totaled 1,967 yard, 10 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, and had a 61.8% completion percentage. He also had a quarterback rating of 86.7 for the Broncos in 2015. He had big wins over the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals which helped the Broncos reach the postseason and secure the number one seed which helped them to advance and win Super Bowl 50.
It all went downhill after that for Osweiler, but his best seasons came while he was wearing a Denver Broncos uniform.
He will provide solid depth behind starter Trevor Siemian and give the Broncos someone with starting experience. It is unsure how this will all work itself out once Paxton Lynch is 100%, but that is another story for another day.
For now, welcome back Brock!
UPDATE 3:10 PM
