Broncos release running back Stevan Ridley and waive running back Juwan Thompson

The Broncos moved on from a pair of running backs.

It was announced by multiple reports that the Broncos have parted ways with veteran running backs, Stevan Ridley and Juwan Thompson, today as the Broncos begin trimming their roster to 53 players.

Ridley joined the Broncos after it was announced that second-year back Devontae Booker would miss the entire summer with a wrist injury. I figured he was washed up after looking at his numbers these past few years, but the veteran back proved me wrong.

Ridley carried the ball 38 times for 109 yards this preseason including an 11 carry for 51 yards and a touchdown during the Broncos preseason finale. He showed he still had life in those legs and is able to contribute to an NFL roster if needed.

If Ridley does not make an NFL roster going forward, look for him to be one of the first people the Broncos call if they need to add some running back depth going forward in the season.

The other back the Broncos parted ways with was running back/fullback/special teamer Juwan Thompson. The former undrafted rookie by the Denver Broncos carried the ball 14 times for 85 yards this preseason including a 9 carry for 56-yard performance in the preseason finale.

I have always been a fan of Thompson’s game ever since he joined the Broncos, but there just wasn’t room for the bruising back. He is also unfortunately out of Practice Squad eligibility so he will need to latch on to someone else's 53 man roster if he wants to continue his NFL career. I think he has proved enough to do so, so hopefully, he does.

These moves basically confirm that C.J. Anderson, Jamaal Charles, Devontae Booker, and impressive rookie De’Angelo Henderson have made the week one roster as well. The Broncos are loaded at running back so hopefully, that means a strong year on the ground for this unit.
