Baker isn't the top name on the market but would be an instant upgrade
Broncos, Tampa Bay are teams hot on DT/DE Chris Baker, per source. Jacksonville in play for DL Calais Campbell. #9sports— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) March 7, 2017
Klis also states that the Jacksonville Jaguars are in play for defensive end/tackle Calais Campbell, who reportedly is high on the Broncos wish list.
Baker has been in the league for eight years and entered the league back in 2009 as an undrafted free agent for the Denver Broncos. He then went on to the Miami Dolphins for one year before playing the next six seasons for the Washington Redskins and turning into a pretty good defensive lineman.
The 6'2", 320lb defensive lineman can play defensive end or nose tackle in a 3-4 defense and is one of the better run defenders in the league. He can also put some pressure on the quarterback as well, so he has turned into a pretty good all-around player.
Pro Football Focus currently has Baker as their 16th best Free Agent on the market currently.
"There are few more anonymous quality players than Washington’s Chris Baker, who for the past two seasons has posted impressive grades against both the run and pass as he has seen his role on defense increase into a starting job. He has averaged 42.5 total pressures over the past two seasons playing defensive end in Washington’s scheme, and has been a tough run defender in each year. Maybe a free-agent contract will give him the recognition his play deserves".
This past season, Baker totaled 47 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 2 pass deflections, and 2 forced fumbles. Back in 2015, he racked up 6 sacks for the Washington defense. During his eight season's in the NFL, Baker has totaled 104 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 5 pass deflections, and 5 forced fumbles.
Now one interesting nugget here is the Broncos passing on Calais Campbell who was reportedly number one on their non-Tony Romo wishlist. Could their interest in Baker be a sign they have moved towards their wishlist that includes Tony Romo? It sure seems so after Klis reported earlier today that the Elway and the Broncos were going to go after Romo if/when he was released.
Either way, Baker provides what the Broncos need, a stout run defender as well as coming much cheaper than Calais Campbell or the other top defensive lineman would have. The Buccaneers appear to be the Broncos competition, but hopefully, they can agree to terms with Baker during the tampering period which begins tomorrow at 2 p.m. MT
