2017 NFL Scouting report: Scouting David Njoku, Miami Tight End

The big and athletic Njoku could be a big and athletic target for the Broncos quarterbacks.

One prospect who the Denver Broncos have been showing interest in and may consider in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft is former Miami Tight end David Njoku. He is a 6'4", 246lb tight end who is considered one of the top tight ends in the draft. Njoku is ranked as the 30th overall prospect in the 2017 NFL Draft according to CBS Sports and is ranked as the second-best tight end in the draft.

Njoku played two season's at the University of Miami and put up some good numbers while he was there. During his two-year career, he totaled 64 receptions for 1,060 yards and 9 touchdowns. His best season was this past season when he had a breakout year and totaled 43 receptions for 698 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Scouting Report

Strengths:

  • Chiseled frame
  • Long arms, broad shoulders, and big hands
  • Highly athletic
  • Huge upside
  • Should be able to win early on with athleticism only
  • 40 time wasn't great, but plays faster than the time
  • Explosive off the snap
  • Goes up to get the ball which makes him a red zone threat
  • Willing blocker
  • Big play threat and matchup nightmare for defenses
  • Should be a big YAC guy
  • Still very young, will turn 21 in July
  • Still growing into his body and will become a better football player
  • Should be able to break tackles after the catch
Weaknesses:
  • Still rather raw
  • Only played two years of college ball
  • Might not be a big impact player right away because of how raw he is
  • Has had issues with drops
  • While a willing blocker, he needs to be coached up there
  • Not a great route runner
  • Overall not very experienced and needs a good coach to help him reach his immense potential

Does David Njoku fit with the Broncos?:

I love the fit.

O.J. Howard has seperated himself as the top tight end in this class, but Miami's David Njoku isn't far behind him and might have the largest upside of all the tight end's in this class.

He might not contribute a ton right away, but if a coach can develop him and work on his technique and route running he can be an All-Pro tight end in this league for a long time. He already has the elite athleticism and great size and probably will win with just that early on, but when it all comes together...oh man.

Also, Broncos Offensive Coordinator had Antonio Gates for year's and helped 2016 rookie Hunter Henry turn in a great rookie year last year, so he has a solid track record with tight ends. I think he could do wonders with a tight end like Njoku.

The Broncos already have Virgil Green, A.J. Derby, and Jeff Heuerman at the position, but neither can do what Njoku could so. They could split him out wide, line up like a traditional tight end, or even put him in the slot or outside. He's a mismatch for defenses wherever he lines up.

Njoku is one of my favorite prospects in the entire draft and I think the Broncos will strongly consider him in the first round of the draft.
