UDFA Greg Milhouse practices with first team in Harrison, Bromley's absence

With Damon Harrison and Jay Bromley dealing with injuries, it's rookie Greg Milhouse who joins Johnathan Hankins and the rest of the starting defensive line.

We were surprised to learn on Thursday that New York Giants defensive tackles Damon Harrison and Jay Bromley would start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Neither case seems to be a serious cause for concern at the moment, but it does open a position on the starting defense next to Johnathan Hankins. The feeling had been that either Montori Hughes or Louis Nix III would take the field in Snacks' and Bromley's place. That, however, wasn't what happened Friday as rookie undrafted free agent Greg Milhouse 'started' with Hankins, Jason Pierre-Paul, and Olivier Vernon.

It's an interesting move for a couple reasons. We knew during the draft process that the Giants had a very serious interest in Milhouse, both attending his pro day and hosting him for a pre-draft visit. Since he was signed as an undrafted free agent, the Giants have obviously liked what they've seen from him enough to move him ahead of Hughes and Nix on their depth charts, despite the two having experience in their defense and in the NFL.

It's only the first day of training camp, and it's easy to be swept away by excitement after the drought of real football news. That being said, it is remarkable for an undrafted free agent rookie to land with the starters on the first day of practice when the last time he played football it was for the Campbell Fighting Camels.

There's a saying that goes "Opportunity breeds success." We'll just have to stay tuned to see if Milhouse is able turn this opportunity into a success.
