Giants roster cuts 2018: Linebacker Mark Herzlich reportedly released

Mark Herzlich

Unlikely run with Giants appears to be over

Year after year Mark Herzlich, the linebacker who beat cancer and tremendous odds to stick with the New York Giants as un undrafted free agent beginning in 2011, found a way to remain on the team’s 53-man roster.

Not this time.

The release of Herzlich ends an amazing, unlikely run with the Giants. Diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma while at Boston College, he made it to the NFL with the Giants.

While never a full-time starter, Herzlich always managed to find a way to make the team as a special teams player and part-time linebacker. He started 18 of the 88 regular-season games he played with the Giants.

Herzlich spent last season on injured reserve due to a stinger.

The Giants have also released Calvin Munson, who benefitted from Herzlich’s absence in 2017 and made the roster.

The releases of Herzlich and Munson could bode well for undrafted rookie linebacker Tae Davis.
