Report - Ereck Flowers staying away from Giants, on trade block

It looks like Flowers’ time with the Giants could be ending

The Ereck Flowers era with the New York Giants could soon be coming to an end. Ian Rapoport is reporting that the 2015 first-round pick has not participated in the team’s voluntary workouts and could soon be dealt. Rapoport indicated the Giants have had such discussions, and believe they can get a draft pick in return.

That answers a question about Flowers that we asked in our preview of the Giants’ voluntary mini-camp, which begins on Tuesday.

After three less than satisfactory seasons as the team’s left Tackle, the Giants signed veteran left tackle Nate Solder this offseason to replace Flowers. The team indicated that head coach Pat Shurmur told Flowers he would be moved to right tackle, where he would compete for the starting role.

We knew Flowers was the only Giant who did not attend the team’s first voluntary conditioning workout. Until now, it wasn’t known if he had attended other sessions.

If the Giants are going to trade Flowers for draft compensation, that will almost certainly happen before or during the upcoming 2018 NFL Draft, which begins on Thursday.

The Giants have second-year players Chad Wheeler and Adam Bisnowaty as potential right tackle options. Moving on from Flowers would increase the likelihood of the Giants selecting a tackle in the draft, perhaps on Day 2.
