Well ... maybe not so fast
As the fallout from the New England Patriots trade of Brandin Cooks to the Los Angeles Rams began to settle, there was a realization. The Patriots suddenly had four picks in the first two rounds of the 2018 NFL — 23rd, 31st, 43rd, 63rd.
The Rams were no longer coming for Beckham. But now the Patriots might be. Beckham to the Belichicks? A nightmare scenario for Giants fans. And yes, yours truly was one who wondered about it. I still wonder about it, or if the Patriots would at least see if Giants GM Dave Gettleman wants to play ball with the No. 2 pick.
The initial evidence, though, is to the contrary. There was this:
I'm told the Pats trading of Cooks is not a precursor to an attempt to land Beckham. New England won't be in that market— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) April 3, 2018
I also touched base with Rich Hill, curator of SB Nation’s Patriots web site, Pats Pulpit. I asked Hill if he thought the Patriots would come calling the Giants for either Beckham or the No. 2 overall pick.
“Nah, I don’t think so. Wouldn’t be their style,” Hill said. “They’re going to invest in OL or something lame and unexciting.”
So, there’s that. Maybe New England won’t call the Giants. Then again, maybe they will. Of all of the scenarios you thought might play out, Giants fans, this isn’t one we saw coming just a few hours ago. Is a trade with the Patriots, for either the No. 2 pick or Beckham, something you could stomach?
