Kiper's choice for Giants is no surprise.
Mel Kiper Jr. is out with version 3.0 of his 2016 NFL mock draft [Insider only], a post-NFL Scouting Combine/pre-NFL free agency edition. Kiper's pick for the Giants? Clemson defensive end Shaq Lawson, a selection that should come as no surprise.
Here is what Kiper says about the pick:
Even if Jason Pierre-Paul were to return, the Giants would be wise to add pass-rushing talent, and Lawson is a good fit here. Like JPP, he's also underrated as a complete defensive end in that he's good against the run.
Free-agency effect: The Giants do have some shopping to do, and if they add pass rush help perhaps this pick becomes a cornerback such as Hargreaves, if available.
As we see in scouring our mock draft database, defensive end continues to be the consensus choice for the Giants. Lawson in particular.
Interesting that Kiper mentioned Florida cornerback Vernon Hargreaves, who went No. 9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in this mock, as a possible pick by the Giants. Hargreaves is a name you see increasingly connected to the Giants as a possibility with the 10th overall selection.
A week or two from now, when the free agency dust settles, perhaps we will have a better idea how likely it might be that the Giants do select a pass rusher with their first pick. For now, thoughts on this, Giants fans?
