2018 free agency: Is OT Seantrel Henderson worth taking a chance on?

He’s already served two suspensions for substance abuse

New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman says that sometimes you have to “dig around” to find quality offensive linemen. Could Gettleman and the Giants dig through the Western New York snow to find a right tackle whose once-promising career with the Buffalo Bills has stalled out?

Henderson started 26 straight games at right tackle for the Bills after being selected in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He missed the final six games of 2015 after being diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, which forced him to undergo two intestinal surgeries.

Since then he has twice been suspended by the NFL for violations of the league’s substance abuse policy, marijuana use he has stated was to deal with pain from the Crohn’s Disease and resulting surgeries. Henderson had also been suspended three times while in college at Miami for marijuana use.

Henderson, who will be 26 next season, has played in only eight games with one start during the past two seasons.

When it comes to looking to the Bills for offensive line help, the most obvious option is a trade for left tackle Cordy Glenn. The Bills like the work rookie Dion Dawkins did there while Glenn was out with an in jury in 2017, and could look to trade him.

Is Henderson, though, worth consideration? He certainly can’t be Plan A or Plan B with his history, but is he a guy worth thinking about and perhaps bringing in on a low-cost one-year deal?

When you are digging around for discarded or undiscovered gems sometimes you have to take a chance. Is this one you would be willing to take?
