Giants’ coach Pat Shurmur wants to “get to know” Odell Beckham

Shurmur will be Beckham’s third coach in five years

Odell Beckham Jr. is scheduled to play the 2018 season on his fifth-year option, which will pay him $8.459 million. On the day the New York Giants introduced Pat Shurmur as their head coach, Beckham was very much part of the story.

Two coaches, Tom Coughlin and Ben McAdoo, have recognized the immense talent possessed by the superstar wide receiver, but haven’t always been able to reign in the over-sized personality.

That will now be on Shurmur’s plate.

“He’s a tremendous player. I’ve watched him play and compete, and when you throw all the other stuff out and you watch him on the field, he’s outstanding. So it makes sense to throw him the football. I’m just going to say that right away. If I didn’t acknowledge that, then you’ve definitely got the wrong guy up here,” Shurmur said.

The Giants have done that, a lot, for four years.

The other part of handling Beckham, though, is managing the personality that comes with the talent — and Beckham’s penchant for making headlines for things that take away from his on-field accomplishments.

“I think what needs to happen now is I need to get to know him. I need to get to know what makes him tick, and I get to ‑‑ I need to talk to him about what it is that we’re looking for for a guy that plays for the New York Giants,” Shurmur said. “And I think those are the things that go back to relationship building that need to happen very, very soon.”

Co-owner John Mara has often said he wants Beckham to spend his career with the Giants. On Friday, he did not seem to be in any rush to get Beckham’s name on a long-term deal.

“We will deal with that at the appropriate time. That is not necessarily right now,” Mara said. “I’ve said before many times that we want him to be a Giant. We will get something done at some point. I first want Pat to sit down with him and for them to have a good understanding of how we are going to act going forward. I have a lot of confidence that it will work out well, but we’ll see.”
