Giants 12, Chiefs 9 (OT): Giants’ kicker Aldrick Rosas blows away doubts

Rookie kicker makes two critical kicks in tough conditions

New York Giants’ placekicker Aldrick Rosas has been having a miserable time the past few weeks. Entering Sunday, he was just 10-of-15 on field goals and had missed kicks in five straight games.

The day turned out to be a miserable one to be an NFL placekicker. Gusty winds between 20 and 30 miles per hour, sometimes gusting higher than that.

Rosas first kick, an extra point, got caught up in the wind, basically stopped, and flew off to the right of the uprights. No good. To add to his previous struggles, that was his first missed extra point of the year.

Then things got better for the rookie kicker in what would turn out to be a 12-9 overtime victory for the Giants.

“Aldrick just kept kicking,” said head coach Ben McAdoo. “That first one that wasn’t pretty. We knew the wind was going to factor there. He just kept fighting. We knew there was going to be some adversity and Aldrick did a good job fighting through it.”

Rosas made a 26-yard field goal with 1:41 left in regulation to give the Giants a 9-6 lead. In overtime, he made a 23-yarder with 1:54 left to give the Giants their second victory of the season.

He called it “a special moment.”

“Just going forward it’s a huge motivational boost,” said Rosas, who needed one after the past few weeks. “Just accountability, to be able to have my number called and go on the field and do my job.”
