Giants Roster Bubble: Which Players Could Lose Roster Spots Before Week 1?

Let’s examine a few possibilities

The New York Giants set their 53-man roster on Saturday, per league rules. That, however, doesn’t mean that group of 53 is the team that will face the Dallas Cowboys in the Sept. 10 season opener.

The waiver claim period ends at noon ET Sunday. Free agents can be signed at any time. Which players could be in jeopardy of losing a roster spot if the Giants are awarded anyone off waivers or sign any free agents? Here are five.

LB Keenan Robinson

Every time I mention his name as a possibility, I get hammered. Even by Giants beat writers I respect. Still, the guy has been in the Concussion Protocol twice this preseason. He might be close to being ready, but he hasn’t been cleared. Yes, he was important to the Giants last year — and still is — but caution might be the best path. He could be brought back later in the year.

CB Michael Hunter

Another player in the concussion protocol who could be sent to IR and perhaps brought back later in the season. As with Robinson, he might be close to being cleared but that’s still a risk.

D.J. Fluker

If the Giants were to sign someone like Alex Boone, or another reserve guard they like, Fluker could be odd man out.

Chad Wheeler

I would hate this and I seriously doubt they would risk losing Wheeler via waivers after keeping him over the drafted Adam Bisnowaty. If, though, they were to sign a veteran swing tackle like Eric Winston it’s possible. Unlikely, but possible. Dropping Fluker — or figuring a way to keep nine offensive linemen — is more likely, at least in my view.

J.T. Thomas or Calvin Munson

Ok, I’m cheating by giving you two names here. If Robinson stays, do the Giants really need six linebackers? Again, I’d hate to see either of these guys go. Neither of them deserves it, but difficult decisions are part of the deal.

Anyway, none of this are really appealing but if the Giants are going to add they also have to subtract from somewhere. Who do you think might be at risk, Giants fans?
