Giants’ TE Matt LaCosse Finally Played Like He Practices

Will strong showing Thursday be enough to get him on the 53-man roster?

For three years, tight end Matt Lacosse has looked fantastic during spring practices and training camps for the New York Giants. Injuries have largely derailed his first two seasons, but his practice performance has not generally translated to production when he has played.

Thursday night, it did.

LaCosse made five catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns, a 25-yarder and a 2-yarder. He made critical receptions on the Giants’ final two offensive plays to set up Aldrick Rosas’ game-winning field goal. He threw a key block, and celebrated it, on a 1-yard touchdown run by Shaun Draughn.

“I had the opportunities tonight to make a few plays and I’m glad I was able to show some people that when the lights come on I can play, too,” LaCosse said after the game.

Did he do enough to make the roster? That probably depends on how many tight ends the Giants keep. Evan Engram, Rhett Ellison and Jerell Adams seem certain to make the 53-man roster. LaCosse and last year’s starter, Will Tye, would seem to need the Giants to keep four tight ends to have a chance.

“My mom told me growing up not to worry about things you can’t control. It’s in their hands now. I played well and I think I showed them I could play,” LaCosse said. “I’m not going to worry about it. I’m going to enjoy this win and go see my fiancé and my dad and have a good time.”

Coach Ben McAdoo said after the Giants defeated the New England Patriots, 40-38, Thursday that they could keep four tight ends if they felt that was warranted.

“We can do anything we need to do. We are going to carry the best players we can carry,” McAdoo. “So we are going to go look at the tape and see how it shakes itself out.”

Now, all LaCosse and everyone else on the roster bubble can do is wait to find out if they make the cut.
