Jeremy Hill Rumors: Giants Don’t Need Bengals’ Running Back

NFL.com article gets the rumor mill fired up

For the past few days there has been a lot of Internet chatter about the idea of the New York Giants making a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals to acquire running back Jeremy Hill. That, by the way, isn’t even a rumor. To my knowledge, it isn’t something either team is actually even considering.

It is simply something NFL.com writer Marc Sessler suggested:

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis loves to slow-cook his rookies, but who are we kidding? By all accounts, Joe Mixon has the goods to start immediately as a workhorse in Cincy's backfield. In the final year of his contract, Hill won't cost much for suitors in search of running-game help. Coming off a playoff season, the Giants could address one of last year's enduring issues -- their stuck-in-the-mud ground game -- by shipping a low-level draft pick to the Bengals in exchange for Hill. He would have the chance to contribute right away ahead of Paul Perkins, who has failed to shine this summer for the G-Men. With the Cowboys holding their breath on the fate of Ezekiel Elliott's six-game ban, the time to strike in the NFC East is now.

The folks at SB Nation’s Bengals web site, Cincy Jungle, think a trade of Hill to the Giants “makes a lot of sense.”

“ ... a trade might make sense for all parties involved. In addition to the obvious benefits the Bengals would receive, that have already been discussed, it could be a great career move for Hill. Unless he plays absolutely out of his mind in 2017, it would seem his time in the Queen City is coming to a close. The Bengals already have the ultra talented Mixon developing in the wings with Bernard available in the same role he has played since Hill won the starting job in 2014. A fresh start in a new city, with a team willing to give up a draft pick for him, might be exactly what Hill needs to revitalize his career.

“Finally, a team like the Giants would be receiving a talented player who could come in and compete for any available rushing role. And hey, Hill is already great friends with Giants star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.”

Of course the deal makes sense for the Bengals. They get something — probably a late-round pick — for a player they don’t need.

It does not make sense for the Giants.

At least, not in my view.

Sure, Hill gained 1,124 yards rushing as a rookie in 2014, averaging 5.1 yards per carry. But, his numbers are fairly pedestrian since, averaging 3.6 and 3.8 yards per carry. Hill had two 100-yard games last season, the only ones he has had since 2014. At 6-foot-1, 233 pounds he might be a nice complement to Paul Perkins. Hill does have 29 touchdowns in three seasons. He might, though, just get in the way of Perkins developing into the lead back the Giants think he can be.

Thing is, despite coach Ben McAdoo’s criticism of Perkins after the first preseason game, the problem with the running game isn’t who is carrying the ball. The problem has been the run-blocking, and we are actually just at the beginning phase of finding out if the Giants have improved there. The addition of Rhett Ellison, the possibility of keeping a true fullback on the roster, potential improvement at the tackle spots and even the presence of Brandon Marshall on the outside could help the blocking.

Hill is a nice player, but not one the Giants need. If they block better Perkins, Orleans Darkwa, Shane Vereen and Wayne Gallman will be just fine.
