90-Man Roster Preview: WR Jerome Lane Searching For His Own Story

UDFA a long-shot to make it with the Giants

At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, Jerome Lane is a big-bodied wide receiver who came to the New York Giants late, signing as an undrafted rookie free agent on June 2. Can Lane make up for lost time and earn a spot with the Giants, at least as a member of the practice squad?

Let’s take a closer look as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the Giants’ 90-man Roster.

2016 Season In Review

In 12 games, Lane caught 62 passes for 1,018 yards, an average of 16.4 yards per catch. He scored six touchdowns.

2017 Season Outlook

Lane is a possession receiver. NFL.com says Lane uses his big body to ward off defenders and that roughly 75 percent of his receptions over the past two seasons have resulted in first downs. Whether he can have that kind of success against stronger, more talented, more experienced NFL cornerbacks remains to be seen.

Lane’s father is Jerome Lane Sr., former star basketball player for the University of Pittsburgh. Yes, that’s Jerome Lane Sr. of “Send it in, Jerome” backboard-shattering dunk fame.

“I need my own. I need my own story, I gotta find one,” Lane Jr. told SB Nation before the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Giants’ have a crowded roster at wide receiver, with a number of candidates for both the 53-man roster. Whether Lane can write that story he is searching for with the Giants is anyone’s guess.
