The Miami Dolphins have announced the jersey numbers for their 2021 NFL Draft rookie class, recent free-agent additions, and incumbents who are switching numbers. The announcement came on Twitter and includes payers like first-round pick Jaylen Waddle, free agent Will Fuller V, and 2020 opt-out returnee Albert Wilson.

The NFL relaxed some of the jersey numbering rules this year, allowing for an expansion of numbers for several positions. The number structures are now:

Running backs/wide receivers 1-49, 80-89
Tight ends 1-49, 80-90
Offensive line 50-79
Defensive line 50-79, 90-99
Linebackers 1-59, 90-99
Defensive backs 1-49

Wilson, a wide receiver, will wear number 2 after having previously worn 15 for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Fuller, a wide receiver who signed with the Dolphins in free agency this year, will have number 3 after wearing 15 for his first five years in the league, all with the Houston Texans.

Backup quarterback Reid Sinnett will change from 17 to 4 for this year. Punter Michael Palardy, signed as a free agent this offseason, will wear 5, the same number he previously Wore with the Carolina Panthers.

Wide receiver Lynn Bowden, Jr., wore 15 for the Dolphins last year, but will now wear number 6. Allen Hurns, who opted out last year, wore 17 for the 2018 season in Dallas and the 2019 season in Miami while wearing 88 for his first four seasons in Jacksonville; he will wear 8 this year.

Cornerback Noah Igbinoghene changes from the 23 jersey number he wore as a rookie last year to number 9. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who has worn 7 in his five previous seasons, one with the New England Patriots and four with the Indianapolis Colts, will now wear 14 in his first seasons with Miami.

Perhaps the strangest number choice this year will be rookie edge rusher Jaelan Phillips who will wear the number 15, the same number he wore at the University of Miami and UCLA. An edge rusher in a teen number may take a minute to get used to seeing.

Wide receiver Robert Foster, who wore 16 in two seasons with the Buffalo Bills then wore 19 with the Washington Football Team last year, will return to 16 with the Dolphins.

Sixth-overall draft pick, wide receiver Waddle, will wear 17 for the Dolphins, the same number he wore at Alabama.

Rookie safety Jevon Holland will wear 22, while rookie running back Gerrid Doaks, who wore 32 and 23 during his time at Cincinnati, will wear 23 for Miami. Running back Jordan Scarlett, who played for the Carolina Panthers in 2019 wearing 20, will wear 28.

Recently signed cornerback Jason McCourty, who has worn 30 throughout his career including eight years with the Tennessee Titans, one year with the Cleveland Browns, and three years with the New England Patriots, will continue with his number.

Running back Malcolm Brown, who signed a one-year contract this offseason with Miami, wore 39 for his first two years with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams before switching to 34. He will continue to wear 34 in Miami.

Running back Terrell Bonds wore 39 and 38 in practice squad and active roster stints with the Baltimore Ravens over the past two years. In Miami, he will switch to 35 on his jersey.

Miami long snapper Blake Ferguson wore 50 last year, but will now wear 44. That frees up 50 for linebacker Benardrick McKinney who wore 55 for his six years with the Houston Texans but wore 50 at Mississippi State.

Linebacker Duke Reiley has previously worn 42 during his time with the Atlanta Falcons, from 2017 into the 2019 season, then wore 50 with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2019 through 2020. He will wear 45 for the Dolphins.

Linebacker Elandon Roberts wore 44 last year with the Dolphins and during his college career at Houston, but will return to 52 this year, the number he wore for four years with the New England Patriots.

Linebacker Brennan Scarlett will continue to wear number 57 as he moves from the Houston Texans for the past five years to Miami this year. Center Matt Skura, moving from the Baltimore Ravens to the Dolphins this year, will change from 68 In Maryland to 62 in Florida, returning to his college number during his career at Duke.

Center Cameron Tom, who joins the Dolphins after a stint with the New Orleans Saints in which he wore both 63 and 62, will wear 64 for Miami. Defensive tackle Adam Butler, moving to Miami from the New England Patriots, will continue to wear 70.

Rookie offensive tackle Liam Eichenberg will continue to wear his college number with the Dolphins, donning the 74 jersey. Center Tyler Gauthier will wear 75 with the Dolphins.

Offensive tackle D.J. Fluker, joining the Dolphins this year, will wear 76, the number he wore with the (then) San Diego Chargers and New York Giants from 2013 through 2017. He wore 78 for two years with the Seattle Seahawks and 70 last year with the Baltimore Ravens.

Rookie offensive tackle Larnel Coleman will wear 79. Tight end Cethan Carter wore 82 with the Cincinnati Bengals and will continue to wear his number in Miami.

Rookie tight end Hunter Long will wear 84, after 41 and 80 at Boston College. He seems pumped about the number:

Wide receiver Kai Locksley will be wearing 87 for the Dolphins after wearing 14 at Texas in 2015 and 1 at UTEP in 2018 and 2019. Tight end Jibri Blount will wear 89 in Miami as he looks to make the switch from power forward for North Carolina Central and Cleveland State’s basketball teams in college.

Defensive tackle John Jenkins has worn several numbers as he enters his ninth season. He wore 92 during his three-plus seasons with the New Orleans Saints and partial season with the Seattle Seahawks. He wore 73 for a year with the Chicago Bears, then 91 for a year with the New York Giants. During his first stint with Miami, he wore 95 in 2019, then wore 90 last year in a return with the Bears. This year, he will wear 90 in South Florida.

Finally, defensive end Jonathan Ledbetter changes from 98 to 93 this year, while defensive end Tyshun Render switches from 64 to 96.
