ESPN: Jay Cutler ‘one QB you would not want as teammate’

ESPN reporters recently polled 155 players about the Quarterback position, asking questions like “Which QB talks the most trash?” and “Which QB do you most want to sack?” While Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Cutler did not show up in the results for either of those questions, he can be found in the responses for two of the other questions - and not questions for which you want to be the response.

There were 64 total responses (either players did not answer the question, or ESPN pulled out the answers that were single votes for a quarterback) to the question “Who is the one QB you would not want as a teammate?” Of those 64 responses, 27, or 42 percent, replied Cutler. The next closest were Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and the Los Angeles Chargers’ Philip Rivers, both of whom received just 6 percent of the responses.

ESPN wrote of Cutler’s ranking:

It was Cutler, however, who won the most derisive nod in the survey. Of those responding, 42 percent said he was the one NFL quarterback they would not want as a teammate. No one else received more than 6 percent of the vote.

Cutler has never overcome the consequences of his surly and dismissive demeanor on and off the field early in his career, culminating with a torrent of criticism he received for sitting out the second half of the 2010 NFC Championship Game because of a knee injury. More recently, his meme-worthy refusal to move while positioned as a receiver in the Wildcat most likely reinforced any convictions that had otherwise faded.

"I'm not even sure he wants to play," one player said of the current Dolphins quarterback.

Cutler did show up in the results, though not near the top, for another question: “Who is the most overrated QB?” There were 72 responses to this question, with Cutler receiving seven percent, tied with Sam Bradford from the Minnesota Vikings. They received half the votes of the leader, the New York Giants’ Eli Manning.

Cutler has struggled early this season, never looking comfortable out on the field. Miami has been buoyed by a stingy defense, third in points per game thus far this season at 16.8 points per game allowed, as well as, this past Sunday, finally finding their running game led by Jay Ajayi. Cutler does not have to be great as long as the Dolphins continue to use Ajayi as they should, and the Dolphins should not be relying on the arm of Cutler.

According to ESPN’s poll, it does not sound like many in the NFL would rely on the arm of Cutler.
