Darren decided to get into Shape after realising he was unfit and triathlon was his way of doing this. He tells Sundried about how he overcomes setbacks and life as a multi-sport athlete.

Have you always been into sport?

A lot when I was a kid but then discovered pubs later in my teens.

What made you decide to enter the world of triathlon?

I used to be seriously overweight and unhealthy and decided to get into shape.

What’s been your favourite race to date and why?

Age Group Sprint World Championships in New Zealand in 2012. My 1st international event and a real buzz.

And your proudest achievement?

Competing for Great Britain Age Group 5 times

Have you ever had any racing disasters / your toughest race yet?

A triathlete came off his bike in front of me on a big hill in Llandudno. I went over the bars onto my head and still completed the Race. Bit dizzy after that!

How do you overcome setbacks?

Go back to basics with nutrition, training and self care. I meditate too.

What is the best bit of advice you wish someone had told you before you started competing?

Make sure your body is in the right shape before you train like crazy. It can make you quite ill if you aren’t functioning properly. Test your mineral levels and gut.

What are your goals for 2018?

To perform well in Denmark in May in the European Long Distance Duathlon final.

Who do you take your inspiration from?

Seb Coe. He knew he wasn’t the best genetically but he just worked and worked until he won.

What do you like about Sundried and what’s your favourite bit of our kit?

I like the temperature controlled clothing. Really cool!
