The Sometimes Late but Always Consistent NFL Power Poll: Super Bowl Edition

By Bryan Dietzler

Well, folks, the biggest game of the football year is about to arrive. We are all set on who is going to play in the Super Bowl and it looks like it’s going to be a good one. The New England Patriots, who seemingly go every single year are headed for another Super Bowl visit. The Philadelphia Eagles are making an appearance after not having been to the Super Bowl for a long time.

But which team is the best? No matter who you pick fans are going tell you that you are wrong. So instead of picking a team to win or coming up with a two-team power poll, I am just going to say a few things about each team and not make a prediction.

New England Patriots-The Patriots are truly the class of the NFL. They just keep winning and it’s all thanks to the quarterback-coach combination of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. These two have singlehandedly dominated the NFL over the past few years. There are many people who feel that they cheat or that the NFL is conspiring to continue to make them champions by paying off referees and relaxing the rules so that they win. We all know that this isn’t true. The Patriots are just that good and will continue to be so until the “gang” breaks up.

New England is the Cadillac of the AFC and is its most dominant team. They get to where they are at by putting together a team that fits the scheme they want to run. Belichick targets players that are going to fit well in his system. A guy that might not work out for one team could come to New England and have success. That player may not be a star but he’s going to be an important part of a team that is going to win a lot of games. It’s just a bunch of individual pieces put together well to keep winning games.

Philadelphia Eagles-The Eagles are the best team in the NFC and have been all season. Even when quarterback Carson Wentz went down, you knew this team would still be able to win. They have a tough defense that doesn’t give up that many yards or points. Their offense is opportunistic. What happened with Wentz was difficult but Nick Foles has been able to step it up and play well enough to get Philadelphia through some tough times. He proved himself big time in their game against the Vikings. He will have one more tough test ahead of him.

Can he deliver?

The Eagles defense is what made them great this season and they need to step it up against the guy who is the best quarterback in the NFL in Brady. If they can get a good pass rush on him and not give him too much time to throw the ball they could be in business. While New England doesn’t have a lot of playmakers at wide receiver, their guys are very effective at coming up with clutch catches. Philadelphia’s secondary is good and needs to be able to keep New England’s wide receivers in check.

I think that this game is too close to call. It will be a good game though. I don’t expect a dominant performance by either team. But the team that is the most disciplined and makes the fewest mistakes, of course, will win this game. We should just hope for a good game that is more like what we saw at the end of last year’s Super Bowl. It would be good for the fans and good for the game of football.
