Liverpool midfielder James Milner has announced his retirement from international football following England’s dismal EURO 2016 exit, as reported by BBC Sport.
The 30-year old has won 61 caps for the Three Lions after making his debut against Holland as a substitute in 2009.
Playing under both Fabio Capello and Roy Hodgson, the former Aston Villa and Manchester City midfielder was included in four major tournament squads.
He also skippered his country on a number of occasions in the absence of the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney and holds the record as the most ever capped England under-21 player.
Winning a whopping 46 caps at that level, the ex-Newcastle United man is by some distance in the lead in that regard.
Across his seven years as an England international, the former Leeds prodigy notched just one goal, during a 2014 World Cup qualifying fixture against Moldova under Hodgson’s stewardship.
“The decision we’ve reached is about common sense. I wish Sam [Allardyce], the players, staff and supporters success in the future,” said the Reds ace.
