Ucl Preview: Real Madrid Vs Sporting

Real Madrid are looking to become the first team since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990 to win back-to-back European Cups.

They will kick off their Champions League ‘Undecima’ defence when they host Portuguese side Sporting CP on Wednesday night in Group F.

Both sides have a 100% record in their respective domestic leagues, but will be hoping to start their European campaign well in a tough Champions League group.

Real Madrid breezed to a 5-2 victory over Osasuna on Saturday, putting themselves 5-0 to the good, before slightly taking their foot off the pedal, perhaps with one eye on this Champions League clash.

On their part, goals from Gelson Martins , and new recruits Joel Campbell, and Bas Dost ensured that Sporting also enjoyed an easy 3-0 victory over Moreirense at Estádio José Alvalade on Saturday.

The Portuguese side finished runners up in the Primeira Liga last season, and should provide Zinedine Zidane’s side with a tough opener.

With Lionel Messi Tuesday night shoting to the top of the standings on the goals’ scorers sheet, many expect Ronaldo to begin the same chase against his boyhood club on Wednesday

Managers’ quote

Zinedine Zidane: “[Ronaldo]’s happy and we all enjoyed having him back. I always want him with us. He will play an hour or so against Sporting CP and we will see what happens. There are many games and we must be careful.”

Jorge Jesus: “We were strong collectively [against Moreirense]. We could have scored more goals, but many players were coming from back from their national teams and we should give them the benefit of the doubt. Bas Dost is a bit like [Islam] Slimani.”
