A big surprise.

Philadelphia sports fans, Eagles Fans in particular, get a bad rap. They’re characterized as drunken, angry, aggressive freaks. Some truth is in that certainly. While it’s annoying for every national TV broadcast to bring up Santa Claus and snowballs, there is a sense of pride in being the most wild people in the world.

Given that, imagine the confusion I felt when seeing a study from Lines about what fans consume the most booze and marijuana on game day (hat tip to Falcons SB Nation site The Falcoholic for finding this).

In polling fans across the NFL, Eagles fans responded that 66 percent of them drink and 56 percent smoke pot during games. If those numbers feel low, you’re not alone in thinking that. It leaves Eagles fans the 19th drunkest fan base in the league and the 15th most baked (is there a way to say that without sounding like a gigantic narc?):

I refuse to believe Cardinals, Jaguars, Falcons and Panthers fans get more rowdy than Eagles fans. And do the Chargers even have fans?!?! For what it’s worth, Cowboys and Patriots fans come right at the bottom in these categories.

The study also indicates that 34 percent of sports fans drink more when their team is losing and 31 percent drink more when their team is ahead. I get both sides of that. Personally, I’m in the latter camp. If the Eagles are collapsing, I like to cut out the casual drinks just because I know it’s going to turn into a miserable experience. If the Eagles are winning? Perhaps with the NFL expecting full fans at stadiums this fall, Eagles fans will come back even more bonkers than before and climb these rankings. I’m left thinking of Frank Reynolds on an airplane in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia:
