Eagles News: Zach Ertz wants himself and Sam Bradford to emulate Rob Gronkowski and Tom Brady

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 4/22/16.

Let's get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

NO DAYS OFF - Zach Ertz's blog
We probably ran about 100 routes each session. Sam was slinging the rock, and Jordan looked great. I thought I did pretty well. Sam looked extremely good, and hopefully he feels the same way about what we did. You could definitely see the chemistry building, and that’s so important for a quarterback and his receivers and tight ends. You saw at times, especially late in the season, the chemistry Sam and I can have with one another. We attacked this offseason looking to improve on that. We want to be among the best quarterback/tight end combinations in the league in 2016. I think Tom Brady and Gronk are the high standard of a quarterback and a tight end playing at the highest level in the game. That’s who we’re going to emulate.

Eagles will draft a quarterback before a huge chunk of the NFL will need one - PhillyVoice
"They're looking at the quarterback landscape going forward," said Casserly. "New Orleans, San Diego, maybe the Patriots, Arizona, the Giants, etc. All of these teams have old quarterbacks. People are going to be dying for quarterbacks in the next couple of years. (The Eagles) got ahead of it by getting one right now." Casserly stopped his list at five teams, but you can make the argument that there are plenty more. Below is a list of teams who have to at least have the quarterback position in the back of their minds, if not the front. Some should be in panic mode to fix their quarterback situations immediately while others will be quarterback shopping in two or three years.

More on the Deal - Iggles Blitz
When it comes to the draft, there is no such thing as a sure thing. You have to deal with probability. Wentz comes from a smaller school. Tough. Wentz doesn’t have ideal experience, in terms of games started or passes thrown. Tough. But Wentz has NFL size. He has an NFL arm. He is a high character player. While Wentz did play lower level competition, he helped his school win 2 national titles. He stood out when he did face elite competition at the Senior Bowl. There is absolutely a strong case to be made for him. It won’t surprise me in the least if Wentz has an outstanding career.

Former coaches of Carson Wentz sing his praises - Daily News
THEY'RE HOPING for good weather next Thursday night in Bismarck, N.D., where as many as 15,000 people are expected to crowd into and around the Community Bowl stadium, set against a hillside, to watch a broadcast of the first round of the NFL draft, live from Chicago. Carson Wentz, the quarterback the Eagles are expected to select after trading up to the second overall spot, is a Bismarck native. "This is a big deal for the state of North Dakota, not just Bismarck," Century High football coach Ron Wingenbach said Thursday afternoon. "That will be a very, very exciting night."

Draft Daily: Pharoh Cooper, A Weapon For Wentz? - Birds 24/7
Three years later, while the receiver has a better idea of what his role on the football field is, he’s still a versatile weapon who played four different positions on offense in college. Scouts say you shouldn’t pigeonhole him because he’s not just a slot receiver, he’s a playmaker. Cooper, who grew up a Percy Harvin fan before jumping on the Randall Cobb bandwagon in recent years, is now considered to be in the mold of both of those players. "Scouts can’t worry about how a player like Cooper is going to be used because that is the (offensive coordinator)’s job," an NFC South scout told Lance Zierlein. "Our job is to find good football players. He’s a good football player."

Eagles deserve an 'A' for trade with Cleveland Browns - NJ.com
Still, what the Eagles and top personnel executive Howie Roseman took a major step in the right direction for the franchise. Who the Eagles take at No. 2 matters — and by all indications, it will be Wentz, the North Dakota State quarterback — it is the aggressive move that deserves a high mark. Moving up was the right move. Analysts have pointed to the risk involved in the deal, but there is far more risk in sticking with Sam Bradford, the team's current quarterback. The chances of Bradford turning into a franchise quarterback, six years and 63 games into his career, are slim. He has yet to prove he can be a winning quarterback.

The music thumped and the players streamed into the auditorium of the NovaCare Complex on Thursday morning for the 8 AM special teams meeting. The Eagles continued their voluntary minicamp, business as usual. Except, we know, it wasn’t ...

Jon Gruden: Too many QBs could make one Eagle 'expendable' - ESPN
"The problem I see right now in Philadelphia is they have too many quarterbacks to be friendly with," Gruden said Thursday. "How are they going to distribute any reps and get anybody ready when you’ve got Sam Bradford making $18 million, you got Chase Daniel, who’s a backup, making $7 million? "Now you’re going to have the No. 2 pick in the draft. I don’t know how you’re going to get these guys all reps and get them all ready, but Doug Pederson will have to answer that. That will be a challenge."

Browns-Eagles trade analysis - ESPN
Looking at the Eagles-Browns trade through the lens of surplus value, we can tally the total value exchanged by each team. The Eagles get $2.2 million of total surplus value while the Browns get $10.2 million, nearly a fivefold increase.

Eagles-Browns Trade: What the Heck is Philly Doing at QB? | The MMQB with Peter King
Yet another blockbuster draft trade with a quarterback in sight—but this time Philadelphia, the team making the big move up, already has two newly signed QBs. Does this deal make any sense for the Eagles?

This offseason or last: Which is stranger for Philly? - Sports on Earth
As much criticism as Chip Kelly's moves from last offseason drew, the Eagles' last few weeks have looked even stranger, including trading up to the No. 2 overall draft pick on Wednesday. Let's compare this year's moves with the ones from a year ago.
