Eagles release Richard Rodgers off injured reserve with injury settlement

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

See ya, Dick Rod.

The Philadelphia Eagles released veteran tight end Richard Rodgers off their injured reserve list with an injury settlement, according to an official announcement from the team.

The Eagles were hoping Rodgers could be their third tight end behind Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert in 2019 but Rodgers couldn’t stay healthy. He suffered a foot injury during training camp and then had a setback shortly after returning to practice in August.

There was some thought the Eagles might keep Rodgers on their original 53-man roster and then place him on IR so he’d be able to be activated later in the season. That’s what the Eagles did with Rodgers back in 2018. But the team made the right decision to not burn a roster spot that way in 2019.

By agreeing to an injury settlement, it’s possible that Rodgers could actually return to the Eagles’ roster later this season. He won’t be eligible to play for Philly until six weeks pass AFTER the length of his settlement, however. So, if the duration of Rodgers’ settlement is for four weeks, he won’t be able to re-sign with Eagles until after Week 11. That’s just an example; the actual length of Rodgers’ settlement isn’t publicly known.

We’ll see if the Eagles bring back Dick Rod at some point. The team is currently rolling with Ertz and Goedert as their only two tight ends on the 53-man roster.

The remaining players on injured reserve include: Malik Jackson, Cre’Von LeBlanc, Joe Ostman, and Aziz Shittu. Jackson and LeBlanc are eligible to return later this year but it sounds like only LeBlanc will be healthy enough to be activated. Ostman is out for the year since the Eagles put him on IR prior to roster cuts. Shittu could easily be waived off IR with an injury settlement at some point.
