Eagles open up some roster space by waiving three players

More moves coming.

The Philadelphia Eagles waived cornerback Chandon Sullivan, linebacker Asantay Brown, and offensive guard Kaleb Johnson on Wednesday afternoon, according to an official announcement from the team.

None of these cuts are surprising. The Eagles are likely freeing up roster space to make room for their undrafted free Agent Signings in wake of the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Eagles originally signed Sullivan and Brown as undrafted free agents around this time last year.

Sullivan flashed in the preseason and earned a spot on the Practice Squad before being promoted to the active roster due to numerous injuries at his position. Sullivan played in five games and actually made one start but he clearly struggled out on the field. He finished the season on the practice squad.

Brown, a safety at the college level, was injured for almost the entirety of training camp. He was kept around on the practice squad for most of the 2018 season.

Johnson, who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent signing with the Ravens back in 2015, joined the Eagles’ practice squad in mid-December. The Eagles wanted more interior offensive line depth after losing Josh Andrews.

It’s possible we see these players return to Philly down the road but for now their time with the Eagles is up.

Philadelphia’s roster is currently compromised of 74 players under contract. Five picks made in the 2019 NFL Draft bring that total up to 79. That leaves space for 11 undrafted free agent signings because the offseason roster limit is 90. It’s always possible the Eagles could cut some more fringe players in the near future.

The Eagles will likely officially announce their 2019 undrafted free agent signings closer to the start of rookie minicamp next week on Friday, May 10.
