Philadelphia Eagles cut rookie safety

Roster move coming?

The Philadelphia Eagles waived undrafted rookie free agent safety Stephen Roberts, according to an official announcement from the team.

Roberts, 22, signed with the Eagles shortly after the 2018 NFL Draft. He played 43 snaps in Philadelphia’s first preseason game. He then played only three snaps in the Eagles’ second preseason game before having to leave early with an injury. Roberts did not log a snap in Philadelphia’s third preseason game against the Browns.

Based on playing time and rotations, it appeared Roberts was previously ahead of fellow undrafted free agent rookie safety Jeremy Reaves on the depth chart. So I guess this news could be good for the South Alabama alumnus, who might have a better shot of making the practice squad now.

It’s curious why the Eagles would feel the need to rush to cut Roberts. Maybe they have another roster move in store? We’ll see.

Keep in mind the Eagles will need to cut their roster (which currently stands at 89 players) down to the regular season 53-man limit by 4:00 PM on next Saturday, September 1.
