Philadelphia Eagles sign wide receiver to reach offseason roster limit

Another Roster move for the Birds.

The Philadelphia Eagles have made another roster move. The team signed free agent wide receiver DeAndre Carter on Saturday morning, according to an official announcement.

Carter, 25, originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent back in 2015. The signed with the Ravens as a rookie so this is clearly another case of Joe Douglas’ #BaltimoreBias.

Carter bounced around the league after failing to make the Ravens’ roster three years ago. He’s since spent time with the Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots (ah, this is the Eagles’ revenge for the Pats signing Paul Turner!), and most recently the 49ers.

San Francisco waived Carter earlier this year back in May. Here’s what our Niners Nation associates wrote at the time:

DeAndre Carter has unfortunately been released. He came to the team in 2017 during the roster overhaul on a two-year deal. Given the draft picks and upgrades at the position, Carter’s release was imminent. There are only so many wide receivers to have on the roster and the 49ers are suddenly bursting with talent. Once the picks of Dante Pettis and Richie James were made and given Carter’s status as a “veteran UDFA” (he has yet to collect any stats on a 53-man roster), the 49ers are going to have some tough decisions to make on the position going forward. Given that he was on the practice squad in 2017, they might have wanted to free that up this year.

The 5-8, 188 pound Carter is likely just a camp body for the Eagles. He does have some returning experience that could be worth a look, though. In four years at Sacramento State, Carter had 10 punt returns for 125 yards and one touchdown. He also averaged 23.7 yards on 18 kick returns.

With Carter signed, the Eagles’ roster is now full at the 90-man offseason limit. They’ll have to make some moves if they want to add any more players at some point. (To free up room for Corey Graham?!)
