NFL Draft Rumors: Eagles are seeking to trade their first round pick

Shocking.

Peter King of The MMQB released his first and only 2018 NFL Mock Draft in the early hours of Monday morning. The mock contains plenty of good draft nuggets, so make sure to check it out.

One thing King had to say about the Eagles is that they want to trade their first round pick. This is hardly shocking, but it’s interesting to see King use such strong language here. Bold emphasis is mine:

32. Philadelphia—Connor Williams, G-T, Texas

But I think the Eagles are much more likely to deal this pick; I just don’t know to whom. They’re seeking a trade—that I can tell you. Philadelphia has no pick in round two or three, and the Eagles don’t pick till the end of round four. So as of now, they go from 33 to 129 without a pick. That’s why they’ll be trying to deal all night Thursday. If they stick … The Eagles have a 35-year-old left tackle, Jason Peters, coming off major injury, and starting guards (Stefan Wisniewski and Brandon Brooks) who will be 29 this season. Connor’s the perfect pick for them, in the unlikely event they stick.

King also mentioned Philly later in his column when talking about teams who could move down.

There will be some trades in this draft that might seem one-sided. Several team officials told me in the past few days that they value Day 2 picks (rounds two and three) so highly that they’d be willing to take slightly less in compensation to move down. Where could this come into play? Cleveland (four), Indianapolis (six), Baltimore (16), Seattle (18), New England (23, 31), New Orleans (27), Philadelphia (32). “This is not your typical draft,” said one veteran club official Sunday. “The second, third and even fourth rounds are gold. You can take less than the trade-value chart says and still make a very good trade if you get multiple picks in those rounds.”

I have a hard time Howie Roseman will end up being on the wrong end of a one-sided trade. Not to mention there’s already a precedent for the price of trading out of No. 32. History tells us the Eagles will likely receive a second and a fourth for moving down, depending on how far they go.

Making a trade like that would be the Eagles three fourth-round picks. According to the draft pick value chart, they could then package two of those together to move up into the third. Or maybe they could use a fourth and, say, Mychal Kendricks to move up in the final round of Day 2. Roseman has options and we know he’s not shy to be creative.

After running through a bunch of mock draft scenarios recently, I feel like trading down is the most likely option for the Birds. It feels like there’s never a big gap between the prospects available to them at No. 32. They might as well move down and get another asset if they’re picking from a similar talent pool. It’s not like they need to force a pick on filling a roster hole, anyway.

Now, if someone unexpectedly falls to the Birds, they should absolutely stay at No. 32 and just take him. Connor Williams is the pick I made for the Eagles in the SB Nation writers mock draft, so I’m clearly on board with King’s selection for Philadelphia. The Eagles’ Super Bowl proved that you can almost never invest too many resources into the trenches.

Trading out of the first round has the potential to be very anticlimactic from a viewing perspective. The first round of the 2018 NFL Draft starts at 8:00 PM ET and the Eagles won’t be on the clock until around 11:45 PM ET, based on last year’s timing. If Roseman then decides to trade out, the Eagles likely won’t be picking until some time after Day 2 begins at 7:00 PM ET on Friday night.

But hey, the Eagles won the Super Bowl. So you can’t really complain too much about the potential draft wait.
