Report: Brandon Brooks reworks contract to give Eagles more cap room

Another restructure.

Right guard Brandon Brooks and the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a reworked contract, according to a report from NFL insider Field Yates.

To be clear, Brooks isn’t taking a pay cut. The Eagles’ ability to lower his cap number in 2018 comes at the expense of raising it in future years. Philadelphia is OK with doing that since the 28-year-old Brooks is coming off a Pro Bowl season and projects to be a key starter for this team in years to come.

Prior to this move, Over The Cap had the Eagles with a mere $1,586,776 in cap room. Only the Los Angeles Rams currently have less at $262,825. Now Philly should have about $7,956,776.

The cap space the Eagles freed up by reworking Brooks’ contract will allow them to be able to sign all of their picks from the 2018 NFL Draft. (Not to mention going after players in undrafted free agency.) Based on their current picks, Over The Cap projects the Eagles’ rookie draft class to cost about $4,534,712 in cap space.

Having extra cap space could also allow the Eagles to make a free agent signing. The Eagles could still use some more depth at safety, for example. Or maybe a Brandon Graham extension is on the horizon? We’ll see.

Brooks is the third Eagles player to agree to a reworked contract in order to free up cap space this offseason. Zach Ertz restructured his deal to open up $5.4 million while Lane Johnson did the same to open up $7.5 million.

Kicking the can down the road isn’t ideal but the Eagles’ hand is forced given their tight cap situation.

UPDATE: Here’s some explanation on the restructure from a well-trusted source!
