Report: Eagles agree to contract with Paul Worrilow

Even more Linebacker depth.

The Philadelphia Eagles are signing free agent linebacker Paul Worrilow to a one-year contract, according to a report from NFL insider Mike Garafolo.

I mentioned Worrilow as a potential free agent target earlier this offseason since the Birds showed interest in him last year. Here’s what I wrote in March 2017:

Worrilow has logged 43 starts with the Falcons since signing with Atlanta as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2013. During that span, he has 242 tackles, four sacks, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions. He lost his starting job in 2016, however, and only played 14.6% of the Falcons’ total defensive snaps that year.

The Eagles won’t be in a big rush to sign the Wilmington, Delaware native assuming they truly are interested in him. He projects more as a versatile, rotational linebacker who can also be a good contributor on special teams.

Worrilow ended up signing with the Lions last offseason. He made eight starts in 13 games played. More specifically, he played 25.4% of Detroit’s defensive snaps and 48.7% of their special teams snaps. He finished the 2017 season with 20 tackles, one pass defensed, and one fumble recovery.

The signing of Worrilow does nothing to quell the rumors of a potential Mychal Kendricks trade. Jordan Hicks and Nigel Bradham are set to start at middle and strongside linebacker in 2018, respectively. Kendricks would currently project to be the weakside starter but the Eagles added free agent signing Corey Nelson to compete for that role this year. The team is also returning 2017 fifth-round pick Nate Gerry to the roster. And now Worrilow is here as well.

Adding Worrilow ultimately gives the Eagles more depth at linebacker and special teams. He can be viewed as a potential Najee Goode replacement.

UPDATE: Official confirmation.

SECOND UPDATE: For those wondering how this impacts the Eagles’ compensatory pick formula, Jimmy Kempski reports it doesn’t. This indicates Worrilow signed for a minimum deal.
