Report: Eagles will host Stanford safety prospect they are “very interested” in

Tracking another pre-draft visit.

Stanford Safety Justin Reid is one of the 30 prospects from the 2018 NFL Draft who will be hosted by the Eagles for a visit in Philadelphia, according to Josh Norris.

Bleeding Green Nation’s own Michael Kist reports he’s heard that Reid is a prospect the Eagles are “very interested in.”

Reid measures in at 6-0, 207 pounds. He’s pretty athletic, as you can see from his testing numbers. Via Mockdraftable:

In three years at Stanford, Reid recorded 170 total tackles, 14 passes defensed, 10.5 tackles for loss, six interceptions, and one sack.

Justin is the younger brother of NFL safety Eric Reid, who was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers. Eric publicly criticized Malcolm Jenkins upon exiting The Players Coalition last season.

On the field, the Eagles’ interest in Reid makes sense. It would not be shocking to see the Birds select a safety relatively high in the 2018 NFL Draft. As we saw with Corey Graham’s usage last year, Jim Schwartz has shown that he likes to use three safety sets. The position is also a long-term need when you consider Malcolm Jenkins turns 31 years old this season and Rodney McLeod could potentially be a cap casualty in the future. Reid offers some of the versatility that Jenkins currently provides.

Scouting report via NFL.com:

Draft Projection: Rounds 1-2

Sources Tell Us: “There aren’t too many issues in his game. If he tests well he could sneak into the back half of the first is my guess. He’s better in coverage than his brother.” -- NFC General Manager

Bottom Line: Reid is what teams are looking for at the safety position in 2018. He’s a plus size/speed prospect who has the athletic ability to help with man coverage and the instincts and ball skills for ball-hawking duties on the back end. Reid can get himself into some trouble when he’s overly aggressive, but his positive plays far outweigh the negative. He has the talent to become an early starter and a good one. Reid’s instincts and play traits should make him a safe selection with Pro Bowl potential down the road.
