John DeFilippo reportedly hired by Vikings: Eagles lose quarterbacks coach

There he goes.

Eagles Quarterbacks Coach John DeFilippo isn’t returning to Philadelphia for the 2018 season. Flip has been hired as the Minnesota Vikings’ new offensive coordinator, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter.

It’s not surprising to see Flip leave. The 39-year-old assistant’s contract was set to expire 10 days after the Eagles’ season. Instead of making the Vikings wait to interview him, the Eagles seemingly granted their request to talk to him. Philadelphia blocked Flip from interviewing for the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator position last offseason, so it seems like they didn’t want to sour relations by delaying an inevitable interview.

Losing Flip is a bummer. He’s a bright young coach who did great work when it came to coaching Carson Wentz and Nick Foles. Wentz played like a regular season MVP in 2017. Foles, meanwhile, won Super Bowl MVP despite being a backup quarterback.

While losing Flip isn’t ideal, it’s important to have perspective when it comes to losing assistant coaches. It’s not like the whole team is suddenly doomed because they lost a quarterbacks coach. And losing assistants comes with the territory of being a good team. Would you rather the Eagles have crappy assistant that no one wants and they can keep? Also, if the Eagles were able to identify good assistants in the first place, maybe have some faith they can identify good replacements.

It was thought that Flip could be promoted to the Eagles’ offensive coordinator position if Frank Reich leaves for the Colts’ vacancy. Indianapolis is reportedly expected to interview Reich this week.

Hopefully the Eagles can retain Reich now that Flip is gone. Losing both of them would mean a lot of turnover on offense. With that said, at least the Eagles still have Super Bowl winning head coach Doug Pederson. He’s pretty good, you know.

If the Eagles choose to hire an internal replacement for Flip, maybe wide receivers Mike Groh is an option to consider. Trent Miles is also a darkhorse name to watch.

Otherwise, some interesting external options for quarterbacks coach could include Jim Caldwell or Mike Shula.

The Super Bowl parade is over and it’s already time to dive into the offseason. Here we go.
