Who should the Eagles pick?
The 2018 NFL season is officially over so you know what that means ... it’s Mock draft season, baby!
ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay released the 2.0 version of his 2018 NFL mock draft on Wednesday. Here’s who he has the Eagles taking with the last pick in the first round (Super Bowl champions!) at No. 32 overall.
Taven Bryan, DT, Florida — After winning a Super Bowl with a backup QB, it’s fair to say this is a deep roster. The Eagles have the luxury of drafting for value, and it’s never a bad idea to add depth along the defensive line. A twitchy one-gap DT with the tools to continue to develop, Bryan is raw, but he has the athleticism to mold and good get-off quickness. He could work into Philadelphia’s defensive line rotation behind Fletcher Cox and Timmy Jernigan.
Bryan measures in at 6-4, 291 pounds. He finished his Gators career with 62 total tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble.
The book on Bryan is that he’s athletic and versatile. His teammates call him J.J. Watt, which certainly isn’t a bad nickname to have.
Bryan is scheme-diverse -- he can be a run-halting strongside end who’d exploit weak right tackles in a 4-3. On third down, he can kick inside and overpower guards. In a 3-4, he’d be a quality block-eater on the outside.
With Beau Allen set to be a free agent, the Eagles could certainly afford to add more defensive line depth. And really, with the way we saw how the Eagles constructed a Super Bowl team by building through the trenches, it’s hard to complain about them investing “too much” in the offensive or defensive lines. Even though Bryan wouldn’t be “starting,” he could be seeing a lot of playing time since the Eagles heavily rotate their d-linemen.
