Eagles News: Philadelphia’s playoff odds got better after the Alshon Jeffery signing

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 3/16/17.

Let's get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

Alshon Jeffery Dramatically Improves Eagles' Playoff Odds - SportsLine
According to SportsLine's projections, the Eagles' projected win total moves up from 7.4 to 7.9 with Jeffery in the fold. They went 7-9 the last two seasons after back-to-back 10-6 campaigns. The chance the Eagles win the NFC East increases from 11.2 to 15.9 percent with Jeffery and, perhaps most importantly, the chance the Eagles make the playoffs rockets from 21.9 to 29.0 percent. That's a mammoth increase of 7.1 percent… for one player.

Terrell Owens reveals origins of feud with Donovan McNabb (or at least his side of it) - PhillyVoice
“That was one of the incidents, but there was a game, I can’t remember if it was… we were playing the Giants or the Browns or whatever the case may be. But throughout the course of practice, there were designed specific plays for myself. [We] ran it over and over, knew it was going to work in the game. [I] ran that play to a T – open, wide open. I didn’t get the ball. I could hear my teammates from the sideline, ‘Why didn’t he throw the ball?’ "So I go back to the huddle and I was like, ‘Dude, I was open.’ And you know what his response was to me? ‘Shut the F up.’ That was disresp–"

End Game - Iggles Blitz
I found this to be really interesting. I figured Anderson is a player the Eagles wouldn’t have any interest in. He played LB at Alabama and is only 6-2, 253. Not everyone likes DEs that small. I’m not sure there is a perfect fit for Anderson in terms of position. I thought he would go to a 3-4 team with a creative coach and carve out a niche for himself. He reminds me a bit of John Simon, who just left the Texans for the Colts. Simon was 6-1, 257 coming out of Ohio State and didn’t fit any real position. The Ravens (and Joe Douglas) loved Simon and drafted him. They couldn’t make it work with him, but Simon found a home with Houston for the past 3 years.

Wide receiver Torrey Smith joins Dave Spadaro in studio to discuss what it is like to now be a Philadelphia Eagle.

The Eagles helped their defense by helping their offense - Daily News
Let me explain: The Eagles were a different team before they lost tackle Lane Johnson for 10 games. They won their first three, should have won their fourth, could have even held an 8-1 or 7-2 record by early November if not for a couple of dubious rookie coaching calls, calls that seemed to be pretending that Johnson was still blocking. This, despite a receiving corps that looked comically inept all season. Just by lining up correctly, Torrey Smith and Alshon Jeffery will be huge improvements over Nelson Agholor. Just by running a correct and precise route better than Dorial Green-Beckham will they underline the challenges last season’s wideouts posed for a rookie quarterback trying to adjust to the speed of the NFL game.

The Eagles Should Draft a Pass Rusher in First Round - Philly Football Talk
15.5 sacks coming from the defensive end position; not exactly eye popping stats. For a defense the prides itself on just rushing four, the Eagles have to be able to get sacks from their ends. Connor Barwin was never a good fit for a 4-3 defense, but still, he produced 5 sacks last season. He is now gone leaving Vinny Curry, Marcus Smith, and Steven Means as potential replacements. We know Vinny Curry signed a 5-year $47.25 million extension last season, but at 28, its officially time to worry if he will ever live up to the kind of money.

Eagles Mailbag: Surprises at 14, starting CBs, John Ross - CSN Philly
Yup. I think so. The deals to bring in Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith shouldn't prevent the Eagles from drafting wideouts. Ross can flat out play. He's more than just a fast 40 time. The concern with him is his injury history. Gotta be available to make an impact. The Eagles will have to really check into his medicals.

NFL trade rumors: Bengals' Jeremy Hill to Eagles? - NJ.com
NBC's Mike Clay had this idea, involving the Eagles and Bengals running back Jeremy Hill. Clay followed it up by including Eagles linebacker Mychal Kendricks, a player that's seemingly always in trade rumors. Hill, 24, isn't your typical veteran back. The former LSU star will be heading into his fourth NFL season in 2017, but has never been anything close to a do-it-all lead back for the Bengals. Since the start of 2014, Hill has averaged just over 14 attempts per game. He's a veteran and experienced, but likely has years and carries left in the tank.

Eagles taking a risk by not addressing defense - DelawareOnline
If the Eagles are starting a rookie cornerback along with Mills, that would seem to go against Roseman’s philosophy during the early part of free agency of signing veteran players who are not only good but can serve as an example for younger players. The Eagles did this at wide receiver for Nelson Agholor and Dorial Green-Beckham, who so far have been disappointments during the early part of their careers.

New Chief Bennie Logan says he is a run stopper and he’s on a prove it deal - Arrowhead Pride
“That is my strength,” Logan said, “stopping the run and what not, but I feel like I can rush the pass also. My numbers as far as sack wise haven’t been there, but this past year, I did a good job of getting to the quarterback before I got injured later in the season.” I know he wants to be a pa$$ rusher but the Chiefs have a few guys they like on passing downs. Most of figure Logan will come off the field on passing downs but it sounds like even Logan doesn’t know his exact role.

Criticism from Ricky Jean-Francois may have contributed to his release - PFT
Washington abruptly dumped veteran defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois on Wednesday. The move immediately triggered suspicion that Jean-Francois has paid the price for being candid about his recent criticisms of the team. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Jean-Francois was surprised by the move. Indeed, he started every game for Washington last year, and he performed well.

Washington's biggest offseason challenge is tuning out a messy situation it created - SB Nation
After an ugly split with its general manager and discord with QB Kirk Cousins, Washington’s biggest task is keeping the self-inflicted wounds from infecting the locker room.
