Eagles beat the Bears, 29-14

The Eagles have looked good twice now!

The Eagles’ second win of the season, a 29-14 win over the Bears, looked very much like their first.

It began, on offense, with a very solid first drive from Carson Wentz which ended in points, although this time it was three instead of seven. He completed eight of his first nine passes, and  The next few drives from Frank Reich’s offense were very much up and down, with not a ton of productivity.

Then, after a solid end to the first half, things picked up in the third Quarter and kept on rolling. The Eagles scored 13 points in the third quarter, and seven more in the fourth quarter.

On the other side of the ball, the Bears didn’t do much well. They began the game by losing 10 yards on their first drive of the game. After two first-quarter drives in which they piled up over 100 yards of offense and a touchdown, the Bears couldn’t muster anything else. The secondary tightened up, the defensive line was seriously disruptive, and Jim Schwartz was pleased.

A punt return touchdown from Eddie Royal made the score a little closer in the end, but the game was never in question in the second half.

Chicago turned the ball over three times before the night was out. Jay Cutler didn’t last the entire game because undrafted free agent Destiny Vaeao might have hurt his hand as he forced a fumble, and Brian Hoyer (LOL) completed a decent amount of passes in garbage time but that didn’t matter at all.

Now, the Eagles stand at 2-0, tied for first in the NFC East and the NFC and the NFL and oh boy, this is kind of exciting.

Of course, it’s only Week 3. We’ll calm down eventually.

But for now, we’re gonna enjoy this.

Doug Pederson ran the game basically the same way he did the first one: no bashful playcalling. He came out with four-wide empty sets on the first five plays of the game, and basically let Carson Wentz do what he wanted.

Wentz looked good again, finishing the game 21-for-34 for 190 yards and one touchdown.

It was, all things considered, another pretty solid game from an Eagles team that looks better than we reasonably expected it to be when the season started.

One less-than-great thing of note, from a looking-towards-next-week standpoint: Caleb Sturgis came up looking sore multiple times during the night. He missed an extra point, and Doug Pederson decided to go for it on a fourth down from the two-yard line instead of kicking a field goal to take an 18-point lead early in the fourth quarter. The Eagles, of course, cut Cody Parkey after Sturgis won the starting kicking job. It’ll be interesting to see what happens during the week.

In general, however, the Eagles are playing good football after two weeks. The defense has allowed just 17 points through two games, and the offense has scored 29 points twice after not doing so once last year.
