Jose Mourinho accuses BBC man of being undercover

Jose Mourinho reached new levels of paranoia on Tuesday when he accused a BBC reporter who had the temerity to ask a question of being sent by another club.

The Manchester United manager was baffled at the suggestion that either him or his club should face charges for the tunnel fracas that marked the end of Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.

“Punish who?” Mourinho asked. “Why?  I think you work for another club…and not for the press.”

Mourinho then flounced out of the press conference, incensed that he had been forced to answer questions about the brawl rather than Wednesday’s opponents Bournemouth.

He stopped at the door and said: “You don’t like Bournemouth, hey? You don’t respect them? You don’t think they are a team capable of coming to Old Trafford and doing well? No respect for Eddie Howe? No respect for the players?”

The press conference had of course been dominated by talk of Sunday – it was the first time Mourinho had faced the press since details had emerged of a confrontation in the Old Trafford tunnel, apparently sparked by the United manager taking offence at the loudness of City’s celebrations.

Pep Guardiola had earlier denied over-celebrating, but Mourinho said: “I am not here to comment on his words. The only thing I can say is that for me, it was just a question of diversity.

“Diversity in behaviour, diversity in education. Just that. And nothing more than that. Diversity of behaviour, of opinion, of education.

“What we did in the Arsenal stadium [after a 3-1 win], you know? It was completely diverse. What we did, what happened after that match, the way we behaved as winners.”
