Former United chief reveals why Sir Alex Ferguson snubbed Zidane

Sir Alex Ferguson rejected the chance to bring Zinedine Zidane to Manchester United because of Eric Cantona.

Zidane was linked with a number of Premier League clubs in the mid 1990s, including Blackburn and Newcastle.

The former turned the Frenchman down, reportedly asking why they would want Zidane when they have Tim Sherwood in midfield.

Newcastle had the opportunity to sign Zidane for £1.2million in 1996, but decided not to after watching him play.

The future Ballon d’Or winner would leave Bordeaux that summer for Juventus, but United had the chance to bring him to England.

Former chief-executive Martin Edwards claimed that Ferguson turned Zidane down.

“Zidane and Eric played in the same position and Alex felt if they brought Zidane in it would have upset Eric,” he said.

“In hindsight yes [it’s a regret], because Eric retired a year later and Zidane was younger so he would have continued it.”
