Manchester United academy manager says that the Club are the best in Europe at developing talent for the first team.
Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard are the only members of the first-team squad who are academy graduates and likely to play much this season, with Paul Pogba a graduate who then left only to return after not getting minutes.
Even so, Butt believes the club’s record indicates that they deserve to be judged as among the best in the game.
“It is a hard job, especially in today’s society, with so many big clubs around the world with a lot of tick-boxes,” Butt told MUTV.
“Financially, with the training ground and everything that all the clubs can offer these boys now, it’s massive.
“We’re competing with a lot of clubs these days but I still believe we’ve got the best pathway.
“It’s a fact we’re probably the best or one of the best in Europe at developing our lads for the first team.
We can speak to parents honestly and say, look, we always give our lads a chance to play for the club; the pathway is there to play if they’re good enough.”
There is no doubt that Manchester United produce a conveyor belt of talent. the questions are whether the huge increase in transfer budgets will make it harder for academy products to break through, and whether Jose Mourinho as manager has any negative effect.
