Monaco chief claims it’s their ‘priority’ to hold onto Mbappe

Monaco CEO Vadim Vasilyev has claimed in an interview with CNN Sport that “the ingredients are there” for the Ligue 1 side to keep Kylian Mbappe at the club.

The 18-year-old has lit up French Football this season with his 15 league goals helping them to the French title, while another six goals in Europe meant Monaco reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Mbappe has been linked with various clubs in recent months – including Manchester United and Real Madrid – but Vasilyev insists that it is the club’s “priority” to hang onto their prospect.

“It is part of our model that some players leave but now we are financially much stronger than two years ago,” explained Vasilyev in an interview with CNN Sport.

“With all these young players, we know that their value will never go down because they are so talented and ambitious.

Following Monaco’s Ligue 1 triumph, Mbappe himself seemed to strongly hint that he would be staying for at least another season.

“For next year, I promise a better season,” said Mbappe. “We must always set the bar high otherwise we do not progress.

“I am very happy. We wanted it [Ligue 1 title] from the beginning, and it’s done.

“We have given ourselves the means of our ambitions, and in football, when we give ourselves the means, it is always less difficult.

“Now we’re going to celebrate, and when the euphoria comes down, we’ll have to get back to work. Football is an eternal challenge.

“It will be necessary immediately to recover to be at least as efficient. Football goes fast but it can go quickly in both directions.”
