Juan Mata says Manchester United are intent on winning the Europa League this season.
The Red Devils advanced to the quarter-finals of Europe’s second tier club competition with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rostov at Old Trafford tonight.
After the match, goalscorer Mata spoke of United’s desire to achieve success in the Europa League so they can return to the Champions League next season.
“That’s our aim,” he told BT Sport when asked if United can win the competition.
“We always wan to win every tournament we play in.
“There’s a good chance if you win to play Champions League next season. There are still very good games in the Europa League.
“We would like to play Champions League next season and this is one way to do it.”
Regarding the match itself, Spaniard Mata felt the Red Devils had the chances early in proceedings to see of the Russian visitors.
“It was as matter of finishing our chances agian,” he added.
“In the first half we played great football, created nice chances but couldn’t finish. You need to score, it’s important we kept our goal with zero, Sergio (Romero) did a great job and our defenders as well so we are happy.
“They are a team that push and they play with a difficult system to play against. We adapted well, we needed to push from the beiginning and thats what we did.”
