England coach Gareth Southgate is ready for talks with Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho over Marcus Rashford’s situation.
Southgate picked Rashford in the senior squad for the matches against Germany and Lithuania this month, but the England manager wants the 19-year-old striker to experience playing tournament football with the Under-21s in June.
He said: “The best thing for Marcus and England would be for him to play in the Under-21s this summer.
“It’s a bit more complex than that because he’s also playing quite a lot of football for a player of his age.
“We have to get the balance right but if we can have success in the tournament in the summer it can give a huge boost for youth development in our country, in terms of confidence for the players.
“I’ve no idea at the moment what his (Mourinho’s) thinking would be. It’s obviously something I would discuss with him in private but their schedule up until now has been so ram-packed that’s one of the clubs I haven’t got into.
“I’ve always been conscious they are two days away from a game. They don’t have the FA Cup now, for example, so hopefully there is a bit more time to go to see them.”
