Wayne Rooney still has plenty to offer for club and country and just needs to regain his Confidence, according to former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke.
The England and Red Devils skipper has had limited playing opportunities in the Premier League this season, making nine starts and scoring only twice.
National team manager Gareth Southgate also admitted that Rooney’s playing time contributed in his omission from the 26-man squad to face Germany and Lithuania, despite there being a chance he could be fit.
However, 1999 treble winner Yorke Believes Rooney can still contribute once he rediscovers his belief.
“It’s probably the first time he’s gone through his professional career having been left out [despite] being the captain and being the talisman for England, and for Manchester United, for a number of years,” said Yorke.
“We know that his playing time, certainly for Manchester United, has been very limited not just to a lack of form but not having the opportunity to play as often as he would like.
“But I still think that Wazza has a lot to contribute. I still think he’s relatively young in terms of football at 31 years-of-age and still could contribute.
“He just needs to get that confidence back.
“We have all played the game and this game is all about confidence. Once he’s got that confidence he still has a lot to offer both for England and for Manchester United Football Club.”
