Jose Mourinho rules two United players out of Rostov tie

Jose Mourinho has ruled both Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial out of Manchester United’s Europa League tie with Rostov on Thursday.

United face Russian side Rostov at Old Trafford in the second leg of their last-16 tie, hoping to build on the 1-1 draw in the first leg.

They will have to do so without the services of captain Rooney and striker Martial, who also missed the club’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Chelsea on Monday.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will feature as his current three-match ban is domestic only, however, while Ander Herrera is also available for the same reason despite his red card at Stamford Bridge.

“If you are injured for the Monday night then you are injured for the Tuesday morning training session, and then you cannot play on Thursday,” Mourinho said.

“So Martial is out of my mind. We have the same players we had in the last match, plus Ibrahimovic returning to the Europa League.

“Rooney is injured. He had a kick to his knee. He stays with the medical department.”

Marouane Fellaini is expected to start after the Belgian conducted Wednesday’s press conference alongside Mourinho.
