Manchester United appoint first counter-terrorism chief

Manchester United have become the first football club in England to Appoint a counter-terrorism manager.

A former inspector from Greater Manchester Police’s specialist search unit has been appointed into a newly-created role, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Last season, full body searches were introduced at Old Trafford. Cars entering the ground are also routinely checked.

The appointment comes after a fake device was accidentally left behind after a training exercise in a toilet cubicle on the final day of last season.

It caused United’s game with Bournemouth to be postponed, replayed at a later date.

Following that, two internet pranksters managed to get their way into Old Trafford and hide after leaving a stadium tour. The two reportedly passed themselves off as members of staff.

It is not known whether the appointment will cause security measures at the ground to be stepped up further.
