‘I haven’t retired yet,’ says Louis van Gaal

Former Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal says that, despite reports, he hasn’t retired from football.

On Monday, De Telegraaf said that Van Gaal had made the decision to retire from his coaching career, with the sudden death of his son-in-law the principal factor in his decision.

However, Van Gaal told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser that reports of his retirement were false, although did not rule out making that same decision in the summer.

Van Gaal also revealed that he turned down an approach to manage Valencia last month.

“No, no no. I have not retired,’ Van Gaal said.

“I am just taking a sabbatical year and after that I will decide. It depends on the offers I receive.

“I could return to Spain. Valencia offered me the manager’s job around a month ago, or five weeks. I said no.

“I’ve coached many clubs and I think it’s very difficult to improve on that level of clubs.

“It’s not true that I’ve retired, not at this moment, but I’ll decide at the end of my sabbatical, next June or July.”

Van Gaal has not managed since being sacked by Manchester United last May.
