Gym Dogs Provide A Sense Of Normalcy, Beat Bama

Somewhere, probably on a private plane flying over the West Indies, Suzanne is smiling. And Sarah is fuming over her mayonnaise-based BBQ sandwich plate.

Many, many moons ago, the sage decision makers at ESPN gave the go ahead for an SEC Storied documentary on the rivalry between Georgia and Alabama in Women’s Gymnastics. “Sarah and Suzanne” was... not exactly what one would expect. After all, at the time, UGA had 10 national championships to Alabama’s 6. I think I can sum up the viewing experience thusly:

“Any documentary that portrays Sarah Patterson in a less harsh light than Suzanne Yoculan is sheer fantasy or Alabama propaganda, and I want no part of it.” - T. Kyle King

Around that time, Georgia still had Alabama’s number on the mats. The tables seemingly turned the last few years, but in these times of uncertainty and where nothing goes according to plan, the Gym Dogs did what they needed to do. They beat Alabama and sent them packing.

For a team plagued by injuries (again) and experiencing ill-timed falls all too often, the ladies from the Classic City thumbed their nose at the Tide last Friday and pulled off their best meet of the season. Alabama performed well - their score of 197.000 is very solid, just not solid enough. Some Red and Black highlights:

  • Season High Meet Score of 197.275
  • Career highs for Hayley de Jong and Amanda Cashman on Vault
  • Career high for de Jong on Bars
  • Season high for Soraya Hawthorne on Floor
  • Six scores of 9.9000 or higher
  • First defeat of Alabama in a dual meet (only two teams competing) since 2013, and actually trailed after the first rotation.

There is no time to rest on recent laurels for these Bulldogs though. They now travel to the loveliest little locker room on the Plains as they take on the Auburn Tigers. It is set for 8:00 pm ET Friday night, and will be available on SEC+.

Coach Courtney Kupets Carter has recruited fairly well the last two cycles, and the results against Alabama is what Gym Dogs fans have been expecting all season. Can these ladies keep up the momentum? They only have 3 more meets before the SEC Championships March 20. Which have recently announced a move to Huntsville from New Orleans. The move was due to the pandemic, so I’m not sure if that means New Orleans is a hot spot or what.

No matter the cause, we’ve got a reason to cheer. Let’s hope this is a sign for things to come, and a strong close to the 2021 season. And as always...

GO ‘DAWGS!!!
