Brice Ramsey to transfer, and other football news

Having already graduated, former 5 star recruit Brice Ramsey was free to enroll at most any other school in the country this fall and play immediately. Given that, there was minimal hope he’d come back for a fifth season in Athens to be a backup punter and 2nd/3rd string QB. Well, that minimal hope is now gone, as Ramsey announced he’d be leaving the program.

One of the highest rated QB recruits in the country, who caught the eye of the likes of Mark Richt and Nick Saban before taking his first high school snap, Ramsey finishes his career in silver britches with 45 completions on 74 attempts (just over 60%), 582 yards, 4 TDs, and 4 picks. He also took on punting duties for parts of the last two seasons when injuries and poor performance from others forced him in to action.

That leaves Kirby Smart with little more than Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm on the roster to sling the ball around between the hedges next season, although there will be a few walk-ons like Stetson Bennett in the mix for practice reps, scout team duty, and an emergency on fall Saturdays.

From all reports, Fromm has stepped on campus this spring and made big impressions, so while they are young, there are two highly capable signal callers on campus. The problem is they are young, and there’s not much beside those two if injury or other issues come up. Plus, for class separation purposes being able to redshirt Fromm would be the preferred route this fall, but this makes that very difficult.

Georgia was tight on numbers in this year’s signing class, and is tight against the overall cap of 85 right now (although a little more attrition this spring and summer as naturally occurs would create space for rewarding walk-ons). But there will likely be a long look at any grad transfer QBs on the market this spring, similar to Ramsey, although a player more willing to hold a clipboard in their final season. Ideally, you look at smaller schools, and a kid whose future is most likely holding a clipboard anyway as a coach, that can provide that depth to allow Fromm to be a redshirt freshman come 2018, but that is a lot easier said than found.

DB Reggie Wilkerson, who played sparingly over the last three years as a CB, S, and special teams cover man, will also transfer. Like Ramsey, Wilkerson has already completed his undergraduate degree in Athens and will be eligible to play wherever he chooses to step on the field next fall.

In other Bad News, cause it’s pretty much all going to be bad news between now and kickoff on September 2nd against Appalachian State, but WR Riley Ridley was arrested for marijuana possession (and a bit of “Do you know who I am?” nonsense) over the weekend. Punishment has yet to be announced, but it will likely include plenty of running, probably a game suspension (see that Sep 2nd date), and a reminder from the staff of who he needs to be away from the field as he runs some more.
