Originally drafted by the New Orleans Saints, Ron Widby caught on with the Dallas Cowboys for the 1968 season. During that first season as a Cowboy, Widby set an NFL record with an 84 yard punt. He wore number 12 in that 1968 season.
Switching over to number 10 for his sophomore season as a Cowboy, Widby Punted the ball 63 times for 2,729 yards. Those numbers were good enough to have him selected as a first team All-Pro.
Widby would improve on the numbers overall in his third season. Although his yards per punt went down marginally, he punted for 2,847 yards on 69 attempts.
His final season as a Cowboy would be a strong one as well, seeing Widby selected to the Pro Bowl, averaging 41.6 yards per punt.
In four years with Dallas, Widby punted the ball 247 times for 10,320 yards and a 41.8 yards per punt average.
Did you know.....that he also played professional basketball for the New Orleans Buccaneers of the ABA?
